Emergency car kit checklist

Remember that it is always better to be a little prepared than not prepared at all. If the checklist seems overwhelming, begin by gathering just one or two items, then add to your supplies over time.

Put a container such as a plastic bin in your trunk. Gather these supplies to fill your bin. One day you’ll be glad.

Always:

  • copy of registration document (keep in glove compartment)
  • proof of insurance (keep in glove compartment)
  • first aid kit
  • a roll of heavy-duty paper towels or shop rags
  • bungie cords
  • blanket
  • water, at least 1 quart, replaced every 3-6 months
  • food such as granola bars or trail mix, replaced every 3-6 months

In case of accident:

  • Small notebook and pen
  • Disposable camera to photograph accident (or use cell phone to photograph accident)

In case of car trouble:

  • jumper cables and instructions in how to use them
  • collapsible gas container
  • motor oil and funnel
  • emergency road flares or reflecting triangle signs
  • latex gloves
  • wrench for removing lug bolts from tires
  • flashlight or generator light
  • blanket
  • collapsible snow shovel, chains and grit such as cat-box litter, in winter areas

In case of evacuation:

  • maps
  • cash, at least enough for two tanks of gas and one night’s hotel

And just in case:

  • duct tape
