Car Kit Checklist

 

Remember that it is always better to be a little prepared than not prepared at all. If the checklist seems overwhelming, begin by gathering just one or two items, then add to your supplies over time.

Put a container such as a plastic bin in your trunk. Gather these supplies to fill your bin. One day you'll be glad.

Always:

  1. copy of registration document (keep in glove compartment)

  2. proof of insurance (keep in glove compartment)

  3. first aid kit

  4. a roll of heavy-duty paper towels or shop rags

  5. bungee cords

  6. blanket

  7. water, at least 1 quart, replaced every 3-6 months

  8. food such as granola bars or trail mix, replaced every 3-6 months

In case of accident:

  1. Small notebook and pen

  2. Disposable camera to photograph accident (or use cell phone to photograph accident)

In case of car trouble:

  1. jumper cables and instructions in how to use them

  2. collapsible gas container

  3. motor oil and funnel

  4. emergency road flares or reflecting triangle signs

  5. latex gloves

  6. wrench for removing lug bolts from tires

  7. flashlight or generator light

  8. blanket

  9. collapsible snow shovel, chains and grit such as cat-box litter, in winter areas

In case of evacuation:

  1. maps

  2. cash, at least enough for two tanks of gas and one night's hotel

And just in case:

  1. duct tape
